Hey everybody. I'm pretty new to this home recording thing so I don't know a lot about sound equipment. Everything I record via microphone has been coming through very quietly. I've been plugging my microphone (PG58) directly into my 8-track (Tascam DP-008). Not sure what needs to be done to get it to pick up better. Does it have something to do with not having some sort of amplification or power in between the mic and the 8 track? This isn't a problem though if I plug my electric guitar directly in, that comes in plenty loud, which is what confuses me...

Another note: I can get the mic loud enough if I turn up the input volume really high on my 8-track, but then it's filled with constant static noise (way too loud relative to the actual recording).

1) Make sure you have selected the input correctly and aren't using the built in mics!
2) There are 3 'sensitivity' input choices for an external mic - you probably want 'low' as this is a dynamic mic

Is this a setting on the 8-track? Also I wrote the wrong name for it: Tascam DP-01FX/CD

It's hard to give advice for equipment if you tell us the WRONG equipment!
First, if you haven't done so read the manual. You can get it here if you don't have it already.

Are you using the XLR input on the Tascam - if not, that's the problem.

and I'm not sure how you could mean to write DP-008 and accidently write DP-01FX/CD!

:D

Seriously ..... read the manual. Whatever you need is in there.
