microphone check!!!!

I am a newbie to recording and I was wondering what kind of microphone would be best for recording vocals, mostly rap,some singing on the computer. I only have a few hundred dollars to spare because I am going away to school. I don't have a mixer so what is this phantom power thing? Can I still use it?

Yep, ametth is probably right. SM 58's can take a lot of abuse and you can slobber all over them when you rap! It'll only set you back a bill too.
