I am a newbie to recording and I was wondering what kind of microphone would be best for recording vocals, mostly rap, some singing on the computer. I only have a few hundred dollars to spare because I am going away to school. I don't have a mixer so what is this phantom power thing? Can I still use it?

Check out the Rode or Audio-Technica line of mics. Both are
smooth and transparent and offer excellent response on the rigors of vocal/rap use. Phantom power is used to power condenser mics. Some mics have self contained batteries that power the mics circuit, but most mixing boards have
48v phantom power. The Shure KSM32 mic is an example of a
mic that requires phantom power(And it's also a great mic
for recording acoustic instrtuments).

....and may I add since you are on a budget, look into a Shure SM58 dynamic mic which needs no internal or external power.
The SM58 is a good mic for vocals @ $90.00. If you check out
http://www.samash.com ,for $95.00 you can get a SM58,mic stand and
a 20ft. GroovePlug cable!

You must give the Yorkville Apex 430 mic a look. Just got one and it is a fine piece of gear for the money. [less than 142 pezzutos.

It's a simple mic; no roll-off switches to confuse your ears. Yorkville does make a mic that costs more with those switches. I have those switches on my AKG3000 but the Yorkville blows it away.

You can reach Yorkville on the net and/or call their USA office in Niagra Falls to get a dealer close to you.

You can, of course, pay much more for a mic and some mics are very good. But, I think you will appreciate the quality of Yorkville. Made in Canada although the "parts" may come from overseas.
