Im looking for a cheap mic that will hookup to my soundcard that is decent for recoridng both vocals and acoustic guitar
any suggestions?

Studio Projects B1 mic ($79) + M-Audio Audiobuddy peamp ($79) = $158

I would say go with a used or ebayed EV 635a instead. Like $40 sometimes.

The SM57 (actualy the 545) surprised me how good it sounded on my vocals, but I never liked it on either my Larrivee dread or Webber OM.

if you already have the preamp, Id say the MXLv67.....

if not the MXL990....Musicains Friend has the 990 for $69 and the Art Tube MP OPL for $59.... about $130 together but thats about the cheapest you can do and not sound like shit......

Get the M-Audio USB Mobilepre (handily beats a consumer soundcard) and a Studio Projects B1. That's the bare minimum for decent sound, IMHO. The two together will run you around $225.

I think they're still selling the Studio Projects VTB-1 mic pre for only $129
at www.digitalproaudio.com
So...

VTB-1 + Studio Projects B1 = Approx. $210.00 (US).
The B1 will (typically) sound better on acoustic than a SM57.

Audix OM-2 and no preamp needed if your soundcard has one.
This is the worst advice I've heard on this forum in weeks.

we know you mean well bluesbear. But it's best not to give out advice until you know what you're talkin about.

YOU my friends on have no idea. It sure beats all the chinese
crap that is being hyped here all the time. It is a shame that we
are loosing jobs every day to all that damn communist shit.
Audix is made in the US. I have no problem recommending it.

Actually, the problem was more that you're recommending using a S/C's on-board pres, which, unless the card was specifically designed for pro-audio use, are generally pretty piss-poor.

There are many mics that are both made by what I call stock China factories, and others that are assembled under specific specifications in China for other manufacturers that are quite good. Many of the models are crap, some are good, and some are exceptional.

You can say the same thing for AKG, Audix, and quite a few others. For the record, not everything Audix makes is made in the USA...

The best mics are usually the ones that work well, "for you". :)

Alan, you are correct. Also I missed that he wanted to record
guitar too and I should not have recommended such a selective
vocal dynamic for it. Audix makes them right her in Oregon.
On the second go I would like recommend the SM57 and a Presonus pre.
Sorry for bringing politics to the board. It is very frustrating though.

Yea well it's easy to get frustrated when we're all being ass's. I'm sorry it's in my nature.

Yeah, sorry if I was a little hard on you. I just remember what it was like to not know anything and so if I see what I feel is bad advice given on these boards I try to point it out, to keep people from making some of the mistakes I've made. (At least I feel they were mistakes, just like I feel it would be a mistake for someone to buy a dynamic and plug it into their soundblaster.) But that's just me.
