The article by Paul Stamler on various microphones, I read today,
is very interesting and well worth checking out.
He talks about the Beyer M88 (the "great unknown" microphone),
EV RE15 (Dolly Parton's vocal mic at RCA-stored in a safe!),
amongst other things. Goes into why bright sounding condensers
need better pre's than less bright ones BTW.
