+1 for the 421

Pretty much a indusrty standard on toms. I also like e604s better than 57s on rack toms. Plus they're so low profile and easy to place on toms.

Oktava mc-o12's are still my first choice. I've had fine results using most dynamics, be it a 57, 58, senn. 835 or e609... best thing you can do is to back them off the heads a bit, and mind where they're pointed. When you've got them right on the skins, you're not getting much of the shell resonence, which is extremely important when it comes to toms.

i feel like maybe i should be looking for something in a hypercardiod pattern

I don't know the distance from the source and the 57, but I have always spaced them 6 - 12 inches away, which I think has less of an attack. I know it will take mic stands but hey, lifes a bummer sometimes.

To close mic toms or not, I think can depend on the style of music. Like someone mentioned before, get your overheads dialed in to represent your entire kit first.

I like the audix mics for toms (D2/D4). There small which is a bonus. I/ve started using a Senn mdp-421 for a kick mic, which also kicks butt on close toms but there pricey.
