Micing drums with shitty mics

When I mic the drummer's kit with two shitty mics (Audio Technica DR1000), you can really hear the room. It sounds like the mics are kind of far away, but they're not. They're right up close. I've tried a few placements: one on the snare and one high on the front of the kick, one in between the toms, one between snare and hi-hat, . . .

What's wrong? Is it the mics?
p.s. I'm going into a Fostex FD-8 multitracker, in the mic in's.

Have you considered "deadening" the room to cut down on sound reflections. Strategically placing blankets, furniture, etc. so you won't hear as much room?
Sorry I can't speak for the mics, I've never used them.

montage is right - sounds like the room to me unless of course you've got mikes with an allround pattern (omni) - never heard of them also - foam mattresses are a good idea.
