Im recording the exact same setup at the minute with an akg d112 and I'm not experiencing the "wolf notes". I did the first few times i tried to record it, but now my room is treated with bass traps and im recording at a reasonably low level so maybe that has something to do with it. The ashdown abm115 im recording can be a bit flabby, so i generally record with a bit more mid and a little less bass than i think is needed in the room. also i switched the akg for an sm57 and the improvement in sound was drastic. I know that doesnt make conventional sense, but it works. the ashdowns have so much power in the low lows, sometimes this records to the detriment of the mids and highs which will make it cut.
what speaker config is it? 4x10 or 1x15? If you can get hold of a 4x10 that helps with clarity and punch in the mix too.
I empathise with your problem because iv suffered myself.
The ashdowns sound so fat and warm live, but ive always had a hard time translating it to record.
