Miced Amp Problems

I was trying to mic my amp with a clean sound but when I listened to the recording it sounded distorted and just plain bad. I used a Shure Beta 58A directly into the cone right up to the fabric. Is there something wrong with that method or do I need a different mic or what?

Could you be a bit more descriptive about the problem?

If you're getting distortion, try moving the mic back, or padding it or turning down the levels.

Whats the beta 58 plugged into, and are you monitoring your levels when youre recording?

You micing is fine. Unless your mic is busted you have a gain staging problems some where further down the line.

It is plugged into a Tascam US-224 and the trim level is set so there is no overload.

Distorting or clipping? What if you turn the gain down on the board. Is there still distortion?

There is no gain on the board persay. There is a knob labeled "Trim" and a green light for signal and a red light for when the signal gets too high. You counteract this by lowering the trim knob so effectivley it is a gain knob but I set that low and it is still distorted.

I also know that the mic is not busted because it records vocals just fine.

Try to mic the amp up w/ the mac starting at the outside edge of the speaker pointing towards the cone about an inch or two from the fabric. What type of guitar/effects/amp are you using? Might be able to give a better answer w/ a little more info.​
