Condenser microphones, specifically large diaphragm condenser (LDC) microphones, are a common choice for studio recordings of vocals. They tend to provide a high level of detail/clarity and are sometimes flattering for voices. The one your brother is recommending is probably the Samson C-01U, as that's the only USB compatible condenser I'm aware of. I wouldn't personally recommend that mic based on Samson's reputation, but it's probably better than what you have now.
