Mic types

I'm looking to buy a mic for boyh vocals and instrumenttal recording, please could you tell me what type I need. I have read about cardoid mics, dynamic mics etc etc...whats the type i need?

Any suggestions for a good budget mic would be great as well.
 
read the huge thread in the mic forum about how mic patterns relate to sound or whatever. started by Chris F, lots of information from Harvey.

It'll answer more questions than you knew you had.
 
57's are okay on vocals but sound crappy on most acoustic instruments. I would say get a Condensor if you can have only one mic.
