Mic suggestion for Sublime style...

I am doing new original music similar to that of Sublime. Right now for vocals I only have a Shure SM7B. This has worked great for some stuff and other people I have recorded, but I don't think it works well for me or this style. It sounds too direct in the mix to me. Can anyone suggest a good condencer around the $400 range that would be good for that vocal style???

You can sing in a similar vocal style but that doesn't mean that your voice will have the same tonal qualities as his or anyone else. You need to find a microphone that compliments your voice. I suggest reading the STICKIES in this forum and you'll begin to understand why.

Some retailers would let to try some mic's out in the store probably. You can compare their effect on your voice. Good luck however you go about it.

...it would help if you were a bit more specific as to what is lacking with the SM7...actually I would think that would work well for the Sublime vibe (at least Brad's voice)...the Kel HM-7u might be a good option (great vocal mic for cheap)...Kel mics have a 30 day return policy, so if it isn't what you're looking for there's no problem returning it...I find that for vocal tracking the HM-7u is a great alternate/compliment to the SM7...almost all the vocals I track are handled well by either one of those two mics...;)

It almost seems like the vocal track is put through some sort of a vintage-er effect...when you are that deep in effects you might pull it off with an SM57.
