mic stand suggestions?

The thing I notice about the Tama stands is that there is NO counterweight that I can see. That looks like a basic plastic cap at the end of the boom...and even if it is metal...there's not enough mass there for it to be a heavy enough counterweight for bigger mics.

True. It isn't weighted enough to balance out a heavy mic at full horizontal extension on a shock mount. Without a shock mount, it's usually pretty solid fairly close to maximum extension because the tripod stand itself isn't exactly light.

If you want to handle a really heavy mic at maximum extension, nothing beats a sandbag on each leg.... :)

I hated my rat shack boom arm. A stereo pair on the end and it likes to spin on you. Full extension and it'll sag, and no amount of brute force clamping can keep it from doing either of those two things. And demonstrated by the finger strength only destruction of the boom anti-spin/slide screw.

The M203SBK or whatever it's model is from Proline is awesome in comparison. Baring that thin and weak metal part between the stand threads and the clutch. That's where my last one broke at. Otherwise a nice boom. Just don't hang 10lbs of stuff on the clutch handle before going out to the car.

I've got my field recorder and two SD MM-1's in a DIY rack type thing. Putting that on a leg is roughly equivalent to the afore mentioned weights. No need to carry extra weigh, I already have plenty in my kit. To include a bag of extra batteries, media cards, headphones, and gadgets. Which I can set on the opposing leg. I'm not that worried about it tipping, but being on unlevel ground is a given. And there's a bit of sway in the wind so I can't really elevate fully when it's windy. Because of the sway.

As far as the OP, there's a number of mic clamps that you can acquire. $10-ish. Or go to the hardware store and get those ceiling hooks for potted plants and some string/rope.

I bought a couple headphone clamps from GC $20-ish each, and those are quite useful items. Clamp that to your mic stand, clamp the table top clamp for the camcorder to it and press record. Finding a camcorder tripod that goes up 15' is an impossible task. Baring the crane type rigs. But those are kind of top heavy for a cam that weighs less than a pound.

What I'm looking for is..........

A little adapter that goes on the end of the mic stand male and female threads that just screws on the end then has the same thread size on top of that I find they are great for that just in case times when you cross thread a boom arm or mic clip resulting in messing up your stand.

But with this adapter you just unscrew it and put a new one on and saves the day with your stand.

This adapter comes standard with some stands but not all. It's kind of like that little brass European thread adapter that come with all mic clips but not the same.

If anyone has a link that would be great or if anyone knows what mic stands they come with then I could contact that company.

THANKS!

moresound I've only ever got those with stands... I've never seen them sold separately.

Radio Shack used to (maybe they still do?) sell these mic mounting flanges:

I have a few mounted around my studio and they are pretty handy.

It's kind of like that Dinty but screws right onto the mic stand with no mounting flange.
Kind of like a mic stand condom if you will. :D

Ya I know what you mean, I've got a few with stands...but never seen them sold just by themselves. :(

No doubt about it John!!!!
They have those cheap "on stage" or similar microphone stands 6 or 8 booms for $99. but the tripod has a very high center of gravity and a SDC with the microphone cord attached can topple it over!.!
It's best to go with a great microphone stand like the K&M or similar for you will get what you pay for!!! ;)

Be advised, Moresound-On Stage actually makes some *really good* mic stands as well, specifically:

Although I prefer the older (discontinued) SB96+, which you can still get from The Sound Room. These bad boys don't tip, don't strip, and can reliably put a good sized stereo pair 12' in the air.

As far as an amp/desk stand goes, the one the original poster showed works just fine. I've got four of them, and I've been using them for six years without a problem.-Richie
