mic sims on the mr8

hey folks,
thanks to my beautiful wife, i'm now the proud owner of an mr8. i need to get a mic and was wondering what people thought of the mic sims on the recorder. are they good enough that i should forgo the little ART package deal with the mic and tube preamp? i'd just like to be able to get a decent sound for acoustic and vocal tracks. what do those with more experience think?

hey andy, I just got my Mr-8 too, but the package, and it came wiht a mic. Now, i dont sing, but we use the mic to mic the amps for a cooler sound, and you can definitly hear a difference btwn the mic sims, while micing an amp anyway. it's just a great add-on, I believe, but since I dont do vocal, it may be worth it for you to get the preamp, but the features are indeed cool :D
 
I too am a Christmas recipient of the mr-8. I haven't had a chance to check out the mic sims yet, I have been using a mixer and running it as line input...I'm still trying to figure out why I only got about 10 track minutes before the card was FULL!!! I have re-formatted the card, maybe I'll get a couple more nanoseconds out of it this time.
 
First, I'd gp with the package deal as the sims aren't anything too great. as for recording time, the system is storing an undo file, if you want more time, you'll have to dump the current "undo file", that should get you alot more time.
 
Thanks.....where were you before I dumped my tracks? I hated to have to do it, but I didn't see any reference in the book. Guess I didn't look hard enough! I did learn a lot about using the mr-8 the first time around though. I now know that there is no reference as to how to RESET A/IN once it is set. Any ideas on that?
 
DUH...never mind. I actually found the answer to my own question. I guess I musta been tired or something yesterday. I also found the "undo" thing in there. I only wish I had found it yesterday!

I've had useable results with an SM57 recording acoustic guitar. The mic sims are subtle and you can use them or not once you listen. The built-in mic is useable too, depending on what you're doing.

At this level you should push on and keep the question of gear out of your way as much as possible.
 
Mic Sims

Even as a novice hobbyist, I'm not very impressed with MR-8's mic sims. To be honest, I cannot tell the difference between the three sims.

Having said that, I was wondering whether the microphone I am using makes a difference. For example, if I bought a decent mic, will that improve the vocal recording? Currently, the vocals seem too heavy (too much base). Would a better mic improve the clarity and crispness of the vocals. Mind you, as my handle suggests, my vocal style is that of Mark Knopfler.

Any suggestions for a good mic? Or does a mic-preamp and effects processor solve the problem?

looking for a mic now

yeah guys, i don't know what kind of mic i'm gonna get but i've got to get something. trying to sing into that little mic on the front of the recorder is just lame. i'm looking at maybe getting a marshall electronics condenser mic for cheap somewhere.

yeah, at this level just push on, but you gotta have a mic if you wanna sing and i'd prefer to just get something that's gonna work the first time.
 
We used a Samson R11 that we got for our PA (as I recall there were three mics in the box for less than a hundred bucks.)

Our results recording vocals have been incredible so far.
