we don't need rest!!
ok..this is my dilema..oh btw, hello all..this is my first post here.
Anyway, I used to work in studios that had some older but decent mics....so I am mostly familiar with AKG451, 414,(and an old C12!) U87, Km184, Ev's Re20, Re15's, Beyer M160, M500, Shures, etc. Nothing too current really. However, I am finding that I am starting to bum out because my ears don't seem to be so demanding on which mic I use or CHOOSE. I have a couple mid level decent mics of my own (the Beyers, Senn 421's, some other dynamics, but no large condensors. I get results that I find I like (shoot I just love the SM57 on A LOT of vocals)and haven't really had any major complaints on the sounds I am getting either from others(my problems seem to come up with finding the perfect song). So..anyway...I now live in the boonies, but I would love to trial out some of the new RODE, Oktavia, etc in my home setup now..but the only way is to order them and return them if I don't like them (which for some reason I am kinda hesitant to do) I don't have a killer setup, but just a Gina, a Mackie 24 x 8, some JBL4311's, and the normal rack stuff. Am I missing the boat and need to buy a new set of ears?...or will I hear a big improvement if I get a Joe Meek(or whatever) and a TLM 103? I am comparing what I am getting at home VS what I was able to do in the commercial studios, and am not really hearing a major difference...what I am really hearing is better "room sounds" due to a decent recording environment to set the drums, record vocals, etc...but the Lexicon rack stuff (not to even mention my Alesis wedge) make up for that pretty good. No..I don't use Samson mics, and Art Fxr elite reverbs...but what is the next level of difference I am not hearing? I have been doing this for 25 years now, like many here, I suppose...but maybe it is not the "side by side" A/B comparisions I am able to do to distinquish between the mics, etc. In one studio I worked, I basically just used the C12 on everything ( we had some old RCA mics too) so it all just seemed to work. I hope I am making sense, making a point, and thanks for letting me ramble...So...do I order a couple grand worth of mics, preamps and try em out at home?...anyone want to hear a CD I'll send free of charge for evaluation? Can't figure out what fork in the road to take now. ...or just have fun and not worry about my Marshall shot ears!!(just kidding...I think ;-)

Well buying and trying is the best way for this game; espcially if you can afford it.

Look into places with really good return policys. I love The Sound Room's www.oktava.com

"A nominal "re-stocking" fee will be charged for microphones returned within twenty days of original purchase. We just ask that PLEASE - do NOT purchase this mic from stock, use for a project and return."

This is so to encourage you to actually use it and compare it to other mics.

Personally, I think you'll hear enough improvement with any you mentioned, other than the Joe Meek; stay away.

Also, I recommend you read around this forum and get a feel for what people are liking.

You say you're not hearing much difference between what you've done at home vs you're stuff in commercial studios?

If you have some stuff you've done in a commercial sudio on CD or cassette and some stuff you've done at home on CD or cassette, I'd be interested in taking a listen.

Recording Engineer...

if these mp3's don't cut it, I could send a CD. Let me know by private email, and I can send you one. As far as some of the stuff done in prof. environments, that is fairly old (15+ yrs) and on 1/2 track reel to reel. I can bounce that over to the computer to make CD's, but upon a recent listen, I actually like the stuff I am doing now, better.
