If you wanna up your quality for $250, get a studio projects b1 mic, the studio projects vtb-1 preamp, and the studio projects xlr cable. Spend the last 2 or 3 bucks on trying wendy's new 99cent chicken sandwhich. You'll have better quality and a good sandwhich to eat while you check out your new gear!!!! Seriously tho, i forgot about the soundcard. You said you are using a alesis usb mixer. I'm assuming you have a stock soundcard tho right? You might wanna spend $100 on a m-audiophile 2496 soundcard so you can have better quality also. Any quality gain that you get from the studio projects pre would be lost when you plug it into that alesis mixer. So, if you can't get it all right now and all you have is a stock soundcard, just get the studio projects b1 ($100) ,the m-audiophile soundcard ($100), and the studio projects xlr cable ($20-$50). Use the preamp on the alesis board for right now and then get a better preamp whenever you are able to. Also, try to see if you can get better deals on your gear from ebay. I got my sp xlr cable on ebay for like $25 bucks when the retail is like $50. The name of the ebay store is big bang audio. Hope i helped you out.

What he said!

You may also want to look in to purchasing a dynamic processor to controll peak-leveling and other dynamics of your voc tracks.

Tone, he could use the XLR inputs on his mixer WITHOUT using the preamps. He can use the VTB-1 and on the output, he can enter the mixer.

Personally I have the Shure KSM27 microphone and was able to talk guitar center down to $250 for it....its a great mic. Im pretty sure the mxl990 is like the cheapest condensor out there so u cant expect much from it (it was my first condenser also). But like the other guys said the most important thing right now is the soundcard, everything will soundlike crap with a stock soundcard.

That's true, but any quality that he gained from the vtb-1 will be lost when he puts the output thru the mixer. That would be double gain staging. It would introduce alot of noise into the signal. Now if you mean that he could run the output of the vtb-1 to the line in on the mixer, that might work because there would not be an extra gain knob to mess things up.

True, I guess it would depend on the specs of his mixer.
