-try using a pop filter and a deesser

-or you can try not to breath!

I dunno nuts about Cubase, I got Cakewalk Home Studio....

-What I do is use the automation to drop the track level 20 or 30 dB down when the loud breathing occurs, and then bring it back up right as the next word starts.

That works. A pop filter and Compression would help also.

Proper mic technique is the number one trick. Keep practicing and try to get it right naturally. Don't hold your breath or talk too long or you will have big breaths in between phrases. Try to find the most natural place in the script to take breaths so it flows better. This is a common problem for all actors and can be overcome with practice.

Tex - did you mis-type here? Maybe you meant expander?

Compression would usually make the breathing even more noticeable?

I just always add compression to VO's and ment it as a general tip. But you are right, it wouldn't help with the breathing specifically. I think the best thing for that is to just not breath irregularly.

I did the narration for a film once and it is pretty hard at first. Especially with a condensor you pick up every little spit, breath and pop. You even start to obsess over how much you move your tounge in between phrases. The trick is just be natural and it won't be distracting.

If using Cool Edit 2.0 you could do a noise reduction and it would take it out

I have at times completely edited out an obnoxious breath here and there with surprising results. I thought it might be noticeable, but it wasn't. Of course there are times when this wont work if the breath is too close to the beginning of the word. Sometimes, especially for words that begin with a vowel, the breath and the word are integral.

High!

Turning your head when having to breathe after long lyric lines may help a lot... Perhaps you used lots of compression with a fast release - this would push the breathing even further up... And you might try to breathe in rhythm - can be nice...

While you may very well have a problem here, you may in the process of addressing it become hyper sensitive to the breath sounds, and overly clean them up. Remember that breathing is a natural part of singing, and that removing every bit of breath sound may not be the best thing, especially in between phrases where you expect to hear it.

In addition to these great suggestions, if you want to clean them up in Cubase specifically, simply open up the wave editor within Cubase, zoom in on the breathing that you want to get rid of in the wav file, use your scissors to cut around it, and then simply mute the spot that you have cut out. You could of course, erase the spots too, or silence them, but I'm always a little wary of erasing stuff in the middle of a track, and the silencing function is destructive editing, so I'm REALLY wary of that!

Are you using version 5.x or SX, or another version?
