Mic Quality Question

I have a question regarding Microphone quality. Does a microphone's quality diminish over time, or does the mic do its job until it completely craps out on you?

I ask because I am thinking of buying some used Senneheiser E835's, but they are a few years old and have been used for a few gigs so I'm not sure if I should be listening extra hard for quality, or should the fact that they work be enough?

Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks

If they work at all they are probably ok. Mics USUALLY last for decades...

although I would probably clean/disinfect the pop screen/filter/foam.

Yes, you'll often see vintage mics in recording studios...decades-old gear!

If they were used at gigs, test them out thoroughly before buying. During my FOH days, I've seen many mics die at the wrong time.

(and also what ido said about cleaning and disinfecting.)

This thread belongs in the Mic section and I'll move it there.

You should see some of my old SM 58's and 57's!
You would swear that they are broken -but- they sound better than a lot of my newer other model microphones.

My only concern would be if they are authentic 835's. That mic (and the SM58) are highly copied and sold on the blackmarket. What can you determine from the seller? There are many mics I will buy used but 835's and 58's (and a couple of others) are a cause for caution. The credibility of the seller is very important here.

Excellent advice everyone, thank you so much. I was very concerned about diminishing quality. In a nutshell, it sounds like I need to make sure they are authentic Sennheiser mics, and then clean the hell out of them.
