MIC PRE's

SITUATION: I want to get a MIC PRE I have the ART TUBE right now, (connected to DM24) it surfices, my recordings are very clean, crisp & clear. I sing through an AKG C2000B mic (dynamic).

would an AVALON 737SP make my vocals any better, JUST BECAUSE it's TUBE or does it make a difference ?

Now you all know the price of 737's so I'm also wondering $$$$ wise, I saw this Bellari stereo tube enhancer -- for a cheap price and a DBX 376 tube Mic Pre, both waaaay cheaper than the 737
would they change anything in my lead vocals to make better
persay ?, or will the AVALON have the greater resonance ?

Basically, in a nutshell, should I just stay with what I have or spring for the BIG BOY just because people say it does wonders for vocals, (that's in the ear of the listener) cause I've had no complaints of my stuff

The Avalon stuff is in another league. Art and Bellari are both aimed at the homerecording market. The 737 is definitely a pre you could find in a pro studio.

It would probably improve your recordings if you got the Avalon, but then again, if you're happy with what you're getting now, why do it?

I do want to be on the larger scale of things, after all I dont want to slack.

I'm just thinking should I charge or wait till my session this weekend and make up 3/4 of the money ---- DAMN CHOICES

yeah Green Hornet, I just found a steal on a HHB CLASSIC 70 for $1200 dual mic pre, compressor, eq, 6 tubes, 4 band parametric

I'm trying to figure out what people mean by WARM vocals: is that breathy like Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston or what.

My stuff is clear and sharp, precise, not cutting into the ear, but hey I have the opportunity to get it "quote un quote" RIGHT THE FIRST TIME AROUND, so why not get it.

The AVALON is cool, but that's so "standard" like you ask someone what kind of compressor they have and they say "AN AVALON 737" oooooooohhhhhhhh so what, do you know how to mix correctly, arrange, pan, set the drums with the lead vocal, placement and all that jazz you know .....

think I'll get that HHB --- I'm going to test it out Friday night

Yo Studio Man:

Warm vocals? I think almost any Frank Sinatra vocal will clearly put into focus warm.

He used some mics that I'd love to try.

But, his articulation, with the right mix of reverb, gave him WARM.

Peggy Lee is another example of warm. And, Barb Striesand -- just magnificent for warm.

I record a gal vocalist who is a good friend and she frequently slurs her syllables. This produces a kind of muddy sound once in a while. Just did a session with her on my Yam 2816 and, the stuff in the unit is able to even clear up her slurred syllables.

More warm....A very good musician friend of mine gave me a cassette that was produced by a professional studio. I listened to the songs and the vocalist and it was very DRY -- not warm. So, for the hell of it, I ran a few cuts into my MD8 [did not have the 2816 at the time] and re-recorded them adding some reverb, cutting some highs/lows and he was astounded at how WARM the music and vocals were. I couldn't do too much because I only had the tracks as WERE on the cassette. But it was fun to WARM up the sounds.

Hope this helps you out and buy whatever you ears like.
