Mic pres and 424 cassette multi-tracking

Hi. Is anyone who's using a 424 or similar also using discrete mic pres - like those 1/2 rack Joe Meek efforts or whatever? I'm right on the edge of getting a 424mkIII but wondered if anyone has any tales of the inbuilt pres and up-grade to separate pres.

Any and every opinion sought. Thanks in advance.

Don't get to pricey in your micpre's, the recording is as good as the recording machine. A 424 does benefit from a micpre, but not as greatly as a DAW, or higher end recorder. A conservitive choice would be best.

Those are good units, see if you can audition them at the store to see which sounds best to your likeing, These units will actually shine quite well when used with/in bigger studio setups or if you go to using a DAW/pooter setup in the future. Take the mic that you will be using with these to do your audition.

Sounds like a damn porn star! Anyway, I have a 488MKII (close to your 424) and I use a DMP3 preamp with it. It cleans things up nicely, has two channels, and won't burn a whole in your pocket-just watch on Ebay or look for a good deal locally.
