hey whats going on. I have a fostex mr8 recorder. and I am interested in getting a mixer for it... I have the Yamaha MG10 and the Eurorach UB1202 in mind considering they are both in my price range and such..i am still unsure of which one I am going to choose...this is for a low budget...home recording studio of mine to make up my own stuff and such...now if I get one of these mixers would it be best to ALSO buy mic preamps and equalizers such as these two I have in mind:

-Presonus Blue TubePRE & Presonus EQ3.
or
-Joemeek ThreeQ.

The reason I am asking if that I think the mixers have mic preamps on them..but would those pre amps that I listed be better then the mixers and give it a better sound or would it just be an extra waste of money? I mostly played hardcore/punk stuff just gonna make myself a demo and use it for writing material. so i want it to sound pretty decent but it doesnt have to be the best. if you could help that would be greatly appreciated. thanks

i and many others at the budget level would recommend the yamaha mg mixer. i would see how this went on (i think you would be quite happy).
then maybe later consider a colored preamp for texture.
instead of an mr8 - do you have a recent pc ? if so you can do loads of tracks on a 1.3ghz or more powerfull PC. if you have q's about pc multitracking. just ask.
peace.

Is it hard to get 4/6/8 (depending on with one you buy) different tracks out of the MG mixers? I noticed that they don't have 4/6/8 outs so how are you people getting the different tracks to go to you soundcard.

By using the channel inserts as direct outs.

well i am going to be recording drums at my friends house so i do not have a pc setup there. i am using the mr8 cause its portable and i purchased it mostly for that...but as far as texture goes...would the preamp make it have a better sound? and as far as pc recording how can i get started on it...for home use i might wanna do this...

so would buying those extra mic preamps be worth it?

How do you change an insert to a direct out? I am looking at this picture
http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Images/ProAudio/Product/Views/mgmixers_rear.jpg and am a little confused on what you mean.

You don't need to change a thing. An insert is a direct out.

One way is to use a "y" connector. One side of the "y" goes into the "in" port of your audio card, the other side goes in the "out". (Goes "in" the "out"...that makes no sense :) )

You just have to determine which part of the "y" is "in" and which is "out". Accordingly you should be able to send the signal coming into the channel through the send portion of the insert, and hear playback through the return.

I think that's right. Been a while since I used a mixer.

:D

points. there are a million possible combos of recording chain.
i posted one of many. an affordable one.
if your interested in hi end mic preamps the only way is to try some out and rent some. and see which floats your boat.
i cannot interpret whats in your head soundwise. its all personal preference.
if you want one great pre thats affordable i would check out fmraudio.com.
you could use this on the lead up front tracks, and the mg for the backing tracks. frankly i dont think the normal consumer will care what you use as long as the song sounds good. but i will say one thing.
a good engineer could do vgood songs with an mg.
its all a question of how good an audio engineer you are.
i'm still learning after many many years.
my advise is to dont spend a lot of money. JUST GET RECORDING, and get
experience under your belt. then after doing it for a couple of years
you will make more educated decisions on equipment.

if you want a nice home pc daw with loads of tracks - as you asked for this.....here it is.
amd athlon,512 ram, 2 fast 7200 rpm hard drives. one small one for windows. one larger for your tracks. put powertracks that i use on it.
(49 bucks. 48 tracks. tons of midi and audio features. just try the demo.
pgmusic.com. cant be beat for the money.)
if you have any more questions just post Hey manning1. as a new subject in the computer section of this bbs, and i'll offer you tips. sometimes i dont see posts as they get buried.
also put a delta multi input sound card in the athlon.
feed direct outs from the mic channels on the mg to the delta in the athlon pc. about 1200 bucks all told or less if you shop wisely.
and youve got a nice studio daw. if you cant do great hit songs
with what ive suggested then it wont be the equipment qualities fault
it will be your own abilities as a songwriter and audio engineer with respect.
peace.
