Ok, here's a stupid questions. I'm embaressed that I don't know the answer to this because I've been recording for years, but I've never compressed outside the box.

I have a Dan Alexander Neve Clone that I've been using for a while and loving. It's my main pre. But lately I find myself wishing I could compress before tape so I'm going to buy a FMR RNC. But I just realized as I was going to order that the Dan Alexander only has XLR outs and the RNC only has unbalanced 1/4" ins. So can I just get an XLR to 1/4" cable (a really nice one) and call it a day? Is there more to it? How do you get the compressor in that chain the correct way?

From that point i would take the 1/4" from the RNC to digi 002 (also 1/4").

Thoughts from you expers out there?

No problema getting a conversion cable -- many vendors to choose from but you might want to check out the following cable vendor:

markertek.com

I run an XLR from my mic to my Grace 101 and then patch out from there to the RNC and then into the recorder -- works cool and, depending on your mic, and your objectives, you will enjoy the sounds.

Nice! Thanks guys. I thought so, but I just never read anything formal about it. Whoohoo!!!

Well, I'm no expert, but I have just the right gear to answer your question. I use an Avalon AD2022, which only has XLR outs, to an RNC (sometimes), to a Digi002, and what you describe will work just fine.-Richie

Wait! HOLD ON! STOP!

You need to know how the neve clone is balanced (transformr balanced or not) Call the company that makes the mic pre before you do anything. Some things can take that, and some things will smoke. Ask the manufacturer

when in doubt

If your not sure you can always use an inexpensive balanced to unbalanced isolation transformer with XLR in and 1/4 out. I have used this method numerous times to go between suspect equipment.
