Mic Pre for 57 & 421 (heavy music)

For music ala In Flames, Killswitch Engage, etc, we're running an Engl Powerball through a 1960a with a 57 and 421 into a M-Audio 1010LT and Nuendo. The sound in the room is very punchy and full, but I'm having some difficulty transferring that fullness to record. I'm thinking of stepping up the quality with an actual pre, rather than using the 1010's stock pres. Any thoughts? My budget is flexible.

For guitars, Neve is meat and potatoes. For budget I'd consider either the Vintech 1272 (2 channels) or the Great River 1NV (single channel). These are still good enough to both be in the 'anything goes' category, but if you have more of a budget that opens you up to more things including the Chandler LTD-1 and Vintech X73i.

1010 stock pres ?

I don’t think the Delta 1010 has any built in mic pre’s (it has line ins), which won’t let any mic work properly. Any of the pre’s Nathen suggested would be excellent, but almost any mic pre is going to be better than going straight into your sound card.

The 1010LT however does have two mic pres.

the 1272 is a 2 gain stage sounds nothing like the 3 gain stages of the 1073 id recomend the great river, but actully brent avril makes some good stuff reasonable ,but if all you want is the tone quality you already have there id recomend a transperent pre like a grace 001 that way the pre is colorless and you get just what you stick in front of it a very trannsperent pre for 600 bucks.

you could also try recording the guitar parts twice, panning them hard lrft and right. Then duplicate those two takes( you should have 4 guitar tracks now) take those duplicates and pan them too. then compress the duplicates hard and turn them down behind the original tracks.

should sound pretty full....
now e.q. it if it needs it.
100hz=beef
250-400hz=roundness, warmth
1k-3k attack and bite
4k and up- crispy, airy effect.

a preamp is usefull stuff for guitars. but you dont HAVE to have one. to sound like in flames.

This recording was done with an SM57 and a 421.
Four tracks, two panned hard left and right, two panned dead center.

Generic Behringer preamps, no EQ, no compression on guitars btw.
