Unless you spend time "placing" the SM57, then EQing it typically around
800 Hz to 1 Khz (2 to 3 db cut) on the male voice, it won't show its full potential. The other important areas to try are around 1 or 2 db at 12 Khz
for "air", and 1 or 2 db at 200 Hz with a shelf or experimenting with "Q" bandwidth. As you know, these adjustments can be done during mixing instead of initial tracking. This method was taught to me by Stephen Paul (RIP) who knew this stuff probably better than anyone on the planet.
This is (usually) how the SM57 has been used on
a legion of pop hits.
And if you don't believe me, ask Tony Visconti or Bob Ohlsson sometime.
Actually prefer the TLM to the U87ai on me BTW.
The other factor would be if the microphones were tested solo vs. in the
actual tracks. Sometimes what was second best solo (or worse) sounds better in relation to the overall track. I picked the M88, for example, because it sounded terrific solo. But when you started to add compression,
let alone any top end EQ, it would bring out sibilance on my voice.
