I own an AT 4060 and use it with a John Hardy M1 and love both of them. I watch Ebay for Hardys and have seen 4 in around 2 years. You'll love it for many types of stuff.

You may want to look into a ribbon mic as well. the Hardy works great with those. My favs are Royer R121 and Beyer M500.

.....and a channel or two of A/D conversion. Any suggestions about the converters? We really only NEED 1 channel, but I imagine there won't be much available in the 1 channel variety. We are looking to spend under $500.

Get a Lynx One. About that price and heads above anything else in the price range.

So I took a look at the Lynx.. How do I use it with my Digi001? Does it come with the analog and digital connections?

Don't know a thing about the Digi001. Does it have SPDIF or AES? What connections does it have?

It has SPDIF and AES which is switchable via software. Are SPDIF and AES one channel or two? I don't really understand why the Lynx is a PCI card. Is it similar to a Delta44 in its design/use? Something that could easily be used by another software like Nuendo or Logic?

Scott

AES and SPDIF are two - L & R or stereo off the Lynx.

The card works on any PCI bus so it is versatile.

You can either use the analog inputs as two mono tracks or one single stereo pair. To communicate with your Digi then you would probably use the SPDIF/AES line to keep things clean.

Anyone else have an opinion on the Lynx converters? How should they compare to the digi001? I also have a Fostex VC-8, those converters sound pretty similar to the 001s.

For $500 converters, I'd look into the Rumor, as well. I am. Plus it's supposed to have fabulous verbs and useable eq. Steve at MOJO Pie thinks it is an incredible value.

Unless you spend time "placing" the SM57, then EQing it typically around
800 Hz to 1 Khz (2 to 3 db cut) on the male voice, it won't show its full potential. The other important areas to try are around 1 or 2 db at 12 Khz
for "air", and 1 or 2 db at 200 Hz with a shelf or experimenting with "Q" bandwidth. As you know, these adjustments can be done during mixing instead of initial tracking. This method was taught to me by Stephen Paul (RIP) who knew this stuff probably better than anyone on the planet.

This is (usually) how the SM57 has been used on a legion of pop hits.
And if you don't believe me, ask Tony Visconti or Bob Ohlsson sometime.:)

Actually prefer the TLM to the U87ai on me BTW.

The other factor would be if the microphones were tested solo vs. in the
actual tracks. Sometimes what was second best solo (or worse) sounds better in relation to the overall track. I picked the M88, for example, because it sounded terrific solo. But when you started to add compression,
let alone any top end EQ, it would bring out sibilance on my voice.
