My neumann tlm103 is on the way,but for the last month I've been racking my brain about a mic preamp. What I would like to get is a two channel preamp with digital out. I know that dbx 386 is out there but I was hoping for a little step up in a quieter preamp. I know the envoice is out there but Im wary of problems with it. What I really want is the aphex 1100 but I wont be able to swing that for some time if ever. I want a mic pre(2ch) with a good a/d convertor or I would condider the apogee rosetta, which also has a lot of features I like. I am convinced that the a/d convertors in my akai dps16 are my weakest link. Am I stressing on the whole preamp thing for nothing and the pre's in my mackie 1642vlz are really, really good? All in all I could probobly swing $1200 to get to where I think I need to be.Or I might already be there and dont know it. Somebody help me.

I dont get the neumann until wed. Gear slut -yes
I'm totally satisfyed with the mackie for drums but Im afraid it may be to bright for vocals and strings. I want something nice and warm- analog sounding- tube type.

did somebody say nice and warm.

one word two syllables

joemeek vc1q.

crap. it only has one channel, and you I believe it has digital out but you have to purchase separately.

but If you need nice and warm AND fat, then Joemeek is king.
$550.
it also has an enhancer if you want to add brightness

yes, yes, I totally want it, I've heard great things about joe meek everywhere but its only one channel so I'm still screwed-I think.

GEAR SLUT GEAR SLUT GEAR SLUT GEAR SLUT GEAR SLUT GEAR SLUT you get the point!

Snapper - what problems?

Hey dobro read something somewhere bout the envoice, hopefully I'm conveying the info correctly.

Everything sounds great and works great execpt for a problem with the the spdif.

This problem is similar to the one you mentioned you had with getting the lexicon to talk to your daw.

No problem recording into the daw with spdif. But if you try to output a pre-recorded track from the daw for purposes of using the compressor at the same time as you are putting the track back into the daw, funky things happen.

I guess you can't use both spdif's at once. This may have been a problem that mindprint has since corrected, but I'd email/call their tech support to make sure before any purchase.

as soon as a workstation is put in record or monitor mode it's digital output carries the same clock info as it's input, which comes from the envoice. However the digital interface in the envoice is set up to automatically lock to an external digital input so a wordclock howlround is produced, where the workstation is clocking to the envoice which is clocking to the workstation. At the very least this will prevent the output from being recorded succesfully.

This excerpt was taken from sospubs. It's what scared me away from this one.

I'll swear up and down about the Envoice.
I want to get another for a stereo pair for my VS1680

For an excellent pristine unit, I can live with unplugging the spdf cable now and then.

I use it without the dig i/o and it is incredibly quiet and open in sound.I have received emails and have been sent information with templates for setting records etc. without asking, just because I emailed their site when I bought it.
They really do care about what you think!! What a concept.

Oh.....the other thing is that the prices are going up. Could it be that they realize they can get more for it.....
