Mic pre amp advice

I just started retracking stuff last night...did a bass part in full colour mode and what a difference, really makes it pop out

So i see it has an insert...do you know how that works with an FX rack that has a separate send and return??

I wish i had the cash to test that lot....but ive got a feeling this isnt my last pre amp, even after the focusrite stuff

Ive heard good things about the brick as well...and they have a good used price

Dunno! I don't dwell in the hardware realm of sends and returns :D I'm sure someone else here who's got one does though!
 
A pre amp is just a pre amp. All it does is amplify the signal. No pre amp worthy of the name will have the slightest effect on the quality of the sound, other than add hiss. Some pre amps are more hissy than others. Buy the least hissy one.

Dude that is SO not true. There's tons of big bucks preamps that color sound.

I was tempted to rant about how and why preamps have an effect on the sound of the material going through them but figured it wasn't worth it and will let some one with more time do so
 
I would tentatively agree that well engineered straight-wire-with-gain preamps (low THD, low noise, appropriate bandwidth) will or should sound similar when operated well within limits.

Differences may become more apparent, however, as the preamp is pushed to higher output levels. Sonic differences will be due, for example, to transformer saturation, the distortion characteristics of the amplifier circuit or op-amps, what happens as output swing approaches supply rails, how well they drive capacitive loads, etc.

Pushing any equipment tends to separate the sheep from the goats.

Unless the object is to push the pre amp to colour the signal...then there is a huge diffrence :)
 
Yeah of course if you want a certain sort of overload distortion, esp for guitars, then you need to think about what to buy. Tubes give the sort of distortion many guitarists like. But if you're not looking for distortion then hiss is the only thing to consider.
