Mic Positioning?

Hello..

I'm an emcee/rapper... I've been recording my own music for a few years now.. But I really think I should step up my mixing skills.

I was wondering if there are any secrets about where to place the mic, or what to do to treat the rooms reverb, to make my mix sound as good as possible.

Yes, I agree, but this is only method #1

Method #2 is to use your own ears in the room. Get the musician to play and go and listen yourself. Move around the instrument listening carefully - and where it sounds best to your ears, put the microphones there.

The positioning on a similar instrument may very well be different depending on the room and the music being played.

Once, when recording a piano, I put the microphones in a totally different place from where I normally do - this was dictated by the room as to where it sounded best.

The other useful "rule of thumb" is to bear in mind the symphony orchestra layout and where the audience would be placed in regard to that particular instrument - and place the microphones in the direction where the audience would normally be seated to hear that instrument.
