i see alot of ppl with there mics upside down...whats the purpose of this...and do u have to have a special kind of stand to have it like that??

Unless you have a tube microphone it serves no purpose at all, aside from astetics. With a tube mic that emmits heat from the tube inside the housing it places the heat source above the mic diaphram/element, heat rises, etc, etc.
As far as a special stand, You need a boom stand. Other than that you just need a secure mic clamp.

Using boom stands or hanging mics definately helps keep stands and cables out of the way more than straight stands. I prefer to set the (vocal) mic(s) so they are located higher than the singer's mouth and nose. Mic angle depending on which mic I am using at the time. This usualy forces the singer to "open up" their throat and increases lung capacity a little. This also helps remind singers to keep their hands off the mics, and helps to keep the propper distance for the mic to do it's job best. There may be better reasons but these are the main reason I like to suspend vocal mics, especially with inexperienced singers.

It was done to (A) keep heat away from the capsule and (B) keep dust from settling on the grille (and away from the diaphragm). And the other reasons (keeping the vocalist "up" etc., etc.) are all pretty valid also.

I like the dust aspect you mentioned. That's a good enough excuse for me to look cool too
Never had a problem with anyone bumping the mic. I always use a boom stand and loosely hang the cable back to the main stand. I set the mic slightly up too, but that's easy with the mic right side up.F.S.
