mic positioning

my bad if this is a newbie question, but i just got a mxl990 mic to record rap with. how should i position this mic? i've seen some artists hold it upside down and some sideways. what kind of effects does the positioning have on recording and how should i do it? thanks

Whatever makes you comfortable. Upside down to keep it out of the way, lots of guys keep it upright.

Just experiment around, use your own ears to decide what sounds best. What is good for one person may not be for the next.

i never understand why people are so scared to experiment. i mean, fair enough back when tapes were being used experimenting could be expensive but now it don't cost shit..





so i suggest you take that mic and you put it in every position possible and have a listen to how it sounds. if you like it, remember the position for future reference. if you don't like the sound, move it around...simple as that really.
