Whenever I record my toms, I always get a "Different" sound out of them. Its kind of pingy?? Sometimes you cant even tell what toms I am hitting. I'm using Audio-Technica Snare/Tom mics and a Remo Powerstripe head <-(brand new). The Mic is about 1 centemeter away from the head. Heres a picture of how I position the mic on the tom. Any suggestions?????

How's the tuning? Any dampening? Maybe start there (if ya haven't already) .
I usually bring my mics 1 to 2 inches off the skin and a 45 degree angle. Just some food for thought...Other than that...just experiment with placement...

the mic is WAT TO CLOSE to the head. Back it off about 2 inches. Also, that is a cheap mic so you might not get very good response!

Yup! Too close. Close doesn't mean better for sound. You've got to pull it back so all the tones develop before it reaches the mic. It also should be pointed where the stick makes contact with the head.

yeah bring it back more and point it straight towards the middle of the head ... i have some crappy nady mics that i use for now and thats the best position (for the best sound) i have found so far
