Mic Placement

I'm just curious how people monitor their mic placement, especially on loud things like drums. I'd love to fiddle around with mic placement on loud sources, but I find it really hard to hear the differences until after I've recorded it, especially since I don't have a control room. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 280s, which are great sounding headphones, but aren't tight enough to be able to move a mic around on a snare and hear the differences while I'm standing next to it. How do you listen to feedback from mic placement with loud sources?

Get someone else to move the mic around while you stand away from the source. Get yourself an extension to your headphones and you can stand in another room.

hmm...
I use the 280's as well and get pretty good isolation from em. I got em for tracking drums. I turn my shit UP tho.
Another thought you may try is the Extreme Isolation headphones. Their claim is "made by drummers for drummers". I've got a pair and they fit too tight for me. I must have a fat head or sumpin...:D
The ones I've got need a lot of gain tho. I have to crank mine up almost all the way to get em loud enough to hear over the source.
The sound isn't bad but the 280's sound better, imo.
They do the isolation well enough tho.

Just another option to look into...

I'm in the same predicament. Over the years I have just learned where to mic each drum. It's trial and error.
