Hey, I sing RnB and i have a higher voice (sorta like maxwell) I am wondering if i can get my vocals to not sound as bright as they do. i usually have the mic (behringer b2) about 6 - 8 inches in front of me. I know about proximity effect (added bass as you get closer to the mic) but what are the characteristics associated with recording further back from the mic??? how far back should i be generally? Or should i just EQ/compress some of the highs down until they are under control. I just want to record the vocal as clean as possible before resorting to processing. Thanks.

Get a mic that better suits your voice. I have never used the Beringer mic, but most cheap condensors usually have an edgy bright high end. See if you can step up to a Shure KSM32

like they said, the problem is the mic.
but assumeing you can't just go out and buy another.....

stay like you are, at least 6' or more from the mic.... getting closer will only make it worse.

try singing into the mic off axis. don't sing directly into the front, try pointing the mic down at like 30 dagrees (or what ever, i'm just pulling numbers out of the air) or try lowering the mic a little (maby 2') and singing over it (don't look down into it, sing over it)

this may help, it may not.
the actual solution would be a better mic.

Wait... did you just suggest miking a singer from six feet!?!?!
:D:eek::D:eek::D

I'm going to guess he used the wrong symbol here, unless:

unless he's advocating miking the singer's belt buckle here! :)
