I currently have the MXL 990/991 which I am really not impressed with. I might give these to my nephew along with my Alesis 8 USB preamp.

So really I currently have no microphones.

I am going to be getting soon, for my first real microphone, a ShinyBox 46MXL. (Mainly used for recording my fiddle.) I guess I'll grab an SM-57 since everyone has one but me. SM-81 seems to pop of often as a good mic, and is inexpensive, so I guess I'll grab one of those also.

Any suggestions to help fill out my mic locker? I need to record acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals also. I want something that sounds expensive but isn't, cause I like my money. :D

Vocals will be mainly old country, western swing, christian pop. Predominantly male vocals; I've been told I sing in the mid to high range.

Should I buy a Gefell? Neumann? Hrmm.. a million mic choices, so confusing

I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

since you've mentioned nuemann this is going to sound really cheap, but why not try an akg perception 100 or 200, $100 to $150 price range and I consider them good mics. regardless of the key you sing in, EQ to doctor it up.

what don't you like about the 990/991's? just wondering, a lot of folks find them to be useful.

Sound a bit harsh, metallic, boxy and the 990 farts once and a while =P
But maybe it is just my junky sound card, preamp, or what I am recording. Perhaps I'll hold onto them for comparison later. Maybe I'll find a use for them for something.
