Milk It
Hi,

Just wondering what kind of adapter I have to buy so that my microphone can go straight into my computer's line in. The computer's microphone input is very small but the microphone input is large enough to go into an amp. Anyone know what kind of adapter I'm looking at?

Cheers,

A 1/4" to 1/8" adapter is probably what you're looking for. They go for about $3 at Radio Shack. It's just a small adapter that snaps on to the end of the cable so it can fit into your sound card.

But to be sure...what kind of microphone/preamp are you using right now?

Also you can not plug a Mic into a Line in Jack, the line in is for Line level sources and the Mic in is for mic level sources....If you want to use the Line in Jack you will need to get an external Mic preamp to the plug the mic into and then from the output of the preamp into the line in on the sound card....

Do yourself a huge favor and get a microphone preamp. The ones built into most sound cards (which is the mic in jack) are very poor, noisy, and for most mics (except those crappy $10 voice chat mics at wal-mart), will not have enough gain.

Even one like the M-Audio Audio Buddy (which I think came down in price to around $60 new) would be so much better. The DMP3 is probably the best preamp in the budget range and goes for $150 new.

Without one, you're only chance is to use the mic in jack and hope for the best. Chances are, you will just get a very noisy, low-level signal.

You can get by with a dynamic mic....most sound cards will support a dynamic like his Lane...but like Danny said, it'll probably be a really crappy pre on that card and sound pretty terrible. I love the Tascam US 144 as an entry level interface..and they're about $150.00.

*edited to say OH...I see where he specified a line in on his card.*

Still, I'll bet it's got a mic in somewhere...they generally all do.
