I just got a cheap condenser, the MXL 990, and I'm having some issues with it. It's not picking up any sound from my voice or instruments but it does react when I tap it or bump it against something. I've tried switching cables, plugging in into my interface directly and also from my mixer then to my interface. I know the phantom power is working since the 991 that came with it is working fine.

Is it just a DOA mic?

Are you absolutely sure it is the mic? Sounds like maybe switch or button not pushed in or out whichever the case may be. Sometimes when I find myself in that situation it is because I don't have something turned on/or up.

is your gain turned up on your mixer? have you tried recording with it?

Look up "Occam's Razor", then implement it at the lowest possible level...

Troubleshooting 101...

The mic "react(s) when (you) tap it or bump it against something".

The case of the mic is omni directional. Which means that the case will react and transmit a vibration to the mic's diaphragm regardless of whether you tap the front or the back of the microphone (do you see where I'm going with this?).

You do know that your mic has a front and a back, don't you?

And I humbly apologize if I am underestimating anyone here...

(BTW: Having once sung the performance of my life into the back of my microphone I know how easily this problem can occur)

Everything is turned up and theres no response. Yes, I'm familiar that theres a front and back to the mic, that isn't the issue.
