mic in usb port?

i read somewhere that you can record your mic through a usb port and it sounds better than with a soundcard (i dont have a mixer i just plug strait into the card)

is this true?

and also do they make either a 1/4" to usb adapter or a xlr to usb adapter?

No, they do not. it needs to have somewhere to plug into. i belive they make usb mics though,
