here's my question. Do you need a mic pre amp to use a mlx603s
mic into 424 mkIII to record an acoustic guitar?

I looked at the specs for the mkIII. It has 4 XLR Preamps built in. What it does not appear to have, and which you will need for a condensor mic like the 603s is phantom power. There are various phantom power boxes you can buy, maybe someone can recommend one.

the Rolls PB223 will run you about $60, Ive never used it though

I wouldn't recommend buying ANYTHING from Rolls - most gawdawful cheap crap I've ever seen!

I agree Bruce, I owned something from rolls once, cant remember what it was but I wasnt pleased. I recomended it because he's only recording to a 4-track, so quality isn't exactly that big of an issue.

But anyway dtb, if money isnt an issue I would take bruce's advice and get another brand.

I bought 1 midi-switcher ($100.00) from them, a week later I needed to exchange it - it just stopped working... The dealer gave me a new one, 3 days later - same shit!! Took it back and got something from a real company!

It was real crap - poor workmanship, very shoddy... if they can't a basic midi channel switcher right, they sure ain't good for much else!!! Also - look out for "Bellari" brand products - that's Rolls, ahem... "high-end" junk!

I remember what I got from them now, it was a direct box. A real POS. Im just now rembering how horrible that thing was. dtb take back everything I have said, dont get the rolls even if it is the only thing you can afford. Thanks Bruce.:D

ph power

can you list a few boxes that may be suitable in my rig.
thanks,

What?! If you were here or I were there, Carter, I'd drain your beer and punch you in the kneecap. In that order:)

dtb, rather than spending $50-100 on a phantom box, why not spend a little more and get a mic pre amp that will supply phantom power like Presonas Blue Tube or ART mp?

Hey, you can hit me in the knee but you better not fuck with my beer.

burt and carter

Don't get excited! I have an ART mp on the way. I think it will do just fine on my gear. Thank you guys and Bruce and anyone else
who saw this thread. This will be my 3rd step up in my home recording hobby and I've gotten a lot of help from everyone here.
Don't let any other newbi tell you different. If I hadn't stumbled on to this site I would still be using 2 boomboxes with internal mikes and after 5 or 6 "back and forth" recording I would still be sitting there asking myself why this shit sounds so bad.

Thanks again,
dtb

Special thanks to Bruce

Quality?

I'll tell you what would be nice. For one of you experts with the real deal recording shit to invite me and my instuments over one weekend and record my stuff for me. Mix it down and dirty. Make me a copy. I'll bring the beer.
Oh yeh, make it close to the great state of Virginia.
Thanks again,
dtb

If I lived anywere near Virginia it would be a deal. Free beer is good beer.:D
