Whats a good recording mic for screaming vocals? I researched and i came up with the shure SM57. Are there any other mics that would be good for this?

SM57, 58

last screaming I recorded was using an AKG D19c. A sixties one & it ruled

sennheiser MD431mkII has given me good results as well

i would use a 57 or 58. i dont know how a condensor would hold up to all that wind and spit flying into it, and i'd rather not find out.

Slidey, are you thinking of the 421, not the 431? j/c

as for the question. All mics are good for screaming. A general rule is if you want the highest quality, you will want to use a condenser microphone, and since high(er) SPL's are involved, maybe use one with a pad. Next thing I would think about would be: dude or chick? For a guy, I would want to use a mic with a darker sound to it, like an Oktava. For a chick, something a little brighter, like a CAD E300. If this is for live apps or on a tight budget, yes. Shure sm57 or 58 would be just fine, though I lean more toward a 57 for screaming.

explain how a dynamic mic is going to pick up screaming better than a condenser.

Check my brain for poop indeed!

well then since you have so many, can I have one? :D

as far as condensors go, the AT4050 and GT55 are standouts IMO. those two were pitted against a blueberry, dragonfly, oktava mc-012, and probably some others i can't remember. the 4050 is crystal clear and the gt55 adds a certain amount of grit to it.

dynamics...sm57 and senn e609 is great. the 57 sounds muffled and laid back in a good way and the 609 can bring out a presence and colors the sound a bit. both good, just different. the 58 might get muddy with proximity effect when it already has an exaggerated one since most screamers love shoving the things half way down their throat.

Screaming!

I dont beleive there is a "best mic", i guess its your preference... All you need to know is how to properly use ur mic without breaking it. Like standing 2 feet away from it. (Condensor)

guff.......................I've had good screaming recordings (other screamers BTW, I prefer to sing) with the screamer 2inches from a solidtube without the pad & 431mkII side by side & had ace results

if you're after a thin weedy screaming sound then stand 2 feet away...............

in my experience dynamics are always better for screaming, because of the oddities in volume you get when someone screams. 57's work great, as does the i5.

The last record I did with a metal band, we used a bullet for a lot of the tracks...then we re-amped the vocal back through several different amps.

stock answers to this question

ev re20
sennheiser 421
sure sm57
sure sm7

currently my go to scream mic is a oktava ml52 ribbon
mmmmmmmmmmm, tasty.
When you get that mic can you start a thread or PM me or something, stating how it performs. I really need a good mic for vocals/screaming/growling/singing (large diaphram condensor aswell)
I am trying so hard to just give up looking and get the rode nt1a BUT i really dont want to get it haha.
thanks

I don't even think you need to bother checking.

There's definitely some loose turds floating around up there.
.

re-20 would probably work good. of course what you're running it through will also make a difference.

Any mic at all, geez, it ain't rocket surgery (MA), it's screamin'

i would think that screaming would put a lot of stress on a condensor mic...

but then again, i dont know what you guys consider screaming, im thinking real hardcore bands like As I Lay Dying or Evergreen Terrace...
