I have a Sony MZ-R91 MD Recorder and wish to record guitar gatherings. I'm hopefully going to attend a one-week acoustic blues course in August and am signed up for a UK gathering of rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic regulars. I would like to record both of these events, and any future events that I go to.

I've got a pair of MXL 603s on order but I presume that I'd be better positioned with a more portable stereo mic.

All suggestions welcome.

You'll probably want a battery-powered stereo condensor. Audio Technica and Shure make decent units. I think Sony makes one that's somewhat OK if the Audio Technica and Shure units are too expensive. Sorry, but I don't recall model numbers. Check their websites though.

A good low cost, highly portable solution is the reactive sounds Delta http://www.reactivesounds.com/ They also make a tiny preamp for minidisc recorders.

The Audo technica 822 http://www.audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT822.html and 825 http://www.audio-technica.com./prodpro/profiles/AT825.html are more typical stand-mount single point stereo microphones. Much higher priced, but something you might use for other recording purposes.

In between those two sony has a whole line of minidisc microphones. Here are a couple of the more popular ones.

Thanks for the replies. I've been doing some research since I posted and have found that this is as big a minefield as choosing which mics and pres for recording to PC was; there are just so many to choose from

First choice to make, other than budget, is what pattern. I don't particularly need versatility here since I've got a pair of SD and an LD on order for home recording; the MD recorder will be used for recording events, but having never attended one of these events, it's difficult to know whether I need cardiod or omni-directional. It's most likely that I need something inbetween. The course in August will probably have the instructor out front and the participants sitting round, and the other gathering will I think be a sort of open mic idea for one of the nights and a couple of workshop type things.

I found some interested gooseneck mics at SoundProfessionals.com but this is more of an innovative way of wearing the mic and doesn't really help much with the mic choice. Although a pair of cardiods at each end would be fairly easy to manipulate

Another neat idea is the Coresoft binaural omni mics that go in your ears or attach to your eye glasses. Not a bad price for what, according to the testimonials anyway, are pretty decent mics for the sort of recording situations I'll be in.

Anyone have any comments on either of the above, or indeed anything else that may be relevant?

I've got a: SOUND PROFESSIONALS
SINGLE POINT STEREO "T" MICROPHONE

It works great for my purposes, and it plugs right in to my sharp minidisc recorder. I've used it to tape a few shows, nature recording and interviews.
