I walked into guitar center today looking to purchase a new mic. I asked the recording guy if I could demo some mics. I had him get the akg perception 200, the at3035, the marshall mxl 9000 tube, and a groove tube mic, although I cannot remember what model the groove tube was exactly, it was a dud anyhow, that is my opinion, please no bashing.
I wanted to start off by saying I had him record each mic on their own track for vocals, and acoustic guitar. The first mic we tested on vocals was the akg perception 200, it was warm, and had a great responsive sound, and I I liked it. I then got the at3035 and we plugged it in, and the sound was even warmer on vocals, a bit deeper, but sounded great. I knew i liked the at3035 the best so far. The third was the groove tube, and it was thin sounding, not much warmth, it wasn't the one for me, cancelled right there..
The 4th mic was the mxl 9000, it had such a warmth to it, the vocals were awesome, and blew away every other mic vocally. Since I was going to be recording acoustic guitar with the mic I wanted to purchase, I figured I should test the acoustic sound also. So he said go pick out a guitar, I said ok. I went and picked out a santa cruz acoustic, I had never even played one before, it had a tag that said "used", and was $2500 dollars. The reason I picked it out, is that it had a rosewood back and sides like mine, and sounded close to mine. I figured this would be nice to get something close in sound. We had the mxl 9000 miced, so I started to play and the sound was over bearingly deep, and started to get muddy.
So the mxl 9000 while the best sounding mic vocally, wasn't up to the task of recording acoustic, like I wanted. We then unhooked the mxl9000 and hooked up the at3035, the sound was amazing to say the least acoustically, and was great vocally, so I chose the at3035, as the best pick. It shined in vocals and was amazing on acoustic, was a no brainer. The at3035 got the vote as the best mic for vocals and acoustic guitar, while the mxl 9000 stood out to be the best vocally.
The akg perception 200 was an ok mic, but the vocals were a bit thinner, and I didn't like that.
I hope this helps some people out. I wanted to turn my day, and the sound recording guys day, into a study to help you guys decide on something with a little more information.
