Newbie question - what is the purpose of the elastic/metal cradle with a condenser mic?

Why is the mic not just connected directly to a mic stand?

For isolation, otherwise foot-tapping, shuffling or computer fan or any other vibration would be easily transferred to the mic, especially a condenser

Thats kinda what I thought. Just wasn't certain.

Thanks.

"Well...the mics in the cradle....t'isolate the room"

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Actually, they're typically called a shock mount.

Little white moth and the man shouting spoon?

Does the next line end with "shin", boy? You know, I thought the word was shin....

*shrugs* It made about as much sense as the original, anyway....
