i have this mic cord that is basicly brand new and it works fine with a dynamic but if i run phantom with it i get all kinds of clicks and pops and crackle sounds. is there a explination for this?
the cable is a prolink performer 500 by monster.

try another cord. if everything else is fine then you got a bum cord.

You say the noise goes away when you turn off the phantom power, are you using a dynamic mic?

i am using an at 4033 with this cord and when i change cords the problem goes away. im just trying to find an explination to why a cord wouldnt take phantom power(it works fine with a dynamic).

I am no good in the science theory business but -
Here is my analogy. You have an instrument cable - one side hooked into an amp, the other in your hand. Turn the volume at 1, tap the connector. You will hear the tapping. Jack the amp up to 10, tap - it will be much louder.
This is my nonscientific explanation whereby Id substitute the volume for the number of volts running thru the cable. When phantom is on, you have 48 volts running about instead of a sheer fraction from a dynamic which you produce. So when bad wires/connectors move - things are pronounced. I am only guessing

The cable could be badly wired - maybe it's been polarity-inverted....

Or your phantom power source has a problem....

One of the connections could have a cold solder joint that doesn't like power under load.

i dont have access to a meter and although the cable is in new condition i have had it a while. i have never used it cause this problem. i havent opened the ends to look at them though either. i do get audio through the 4033 but it sounds like it is shorting out. my phantom power on my desk works fine with any other cable i have ever used. i might just cut this cord up and try to make 2 or 3 out of it.

dosent? I think I took one of those when I couldn't sleep one time.

Naw, just replace it with a new one... and throw the old crappy one away.
