I'm looking for some mic clips that will allow me to attach a couple of MXL 603's to the cross braces of my grand piano in an X/Y configuration (with the spider mounts). Basically, this would require a "double clip" setup (one clip/clamp for the brace, and a set of mic clip threads for the 603 spider mounts) for each mic plus an extension to allow the two mics to cross X/Y over the strings. I'd like to get this set up to where I can just leave the mics and cables in the piano all the time (once I find the right placement, of course) and hooked up to my recording rig full time. Anybody have any ideas of what might work? I've looked at a bunch of drum clips, but I have no idea if they have threads for the spider mounts (they all come with clips). Does anybody know of anything that might do the trick?

Looks like you're in for a bit of fabrication Chris. I'd love to be in your perdicament.. hehe making tools can be fun.. that sounds like a fairly specialized tool.. It doesn't sound like something that you'll find because it probably won't be able to be very adjustable in order for it to do the job you need it to do... It will most likely need to be fit to size... does teh lid need to close? and do you have a picture of the piano inside?

I might be able to give some suggestions of what you can use to fabricate it if you'd like em.. and if you're able to spend that kind of time on the project...

cheers!

I was afraid of the whole "fabrication" thing. There's a set of clips on the piano at the local jazz club, but the owner says he can't remember where he got them. The lid of the piano doesn't have to close - it can stay on half-stick. Basically any kind of small gooseneck mic holder should do as long as it will hold the spidermount for the 603's. The cross braces are nearly parallel anyway, so all I'd have to do is find a way to mount the goosenecks to the braces. Maybe with a C-clamp?

Anyway, anybody know where I might find any small gooseneck attachments threaded for mics?

First, get a stereo mic mount ($10 at Guitar Center). Make sure you can mount your shock mounts to it and that they clear each other in coincedent (X-Y) configuration. The mic mount will screw on to any standard gooseneck or mic mount thread. Then attach the gooseneck (or better, an On Stage mic stand extension arm) to the bottom plate of a small desk stand, and attach that to the lid.
For the recored, I wouldn't do that, not only because attaching a base plate to the lid requires modifying the lid (screws, glue, ? velcro), but I would be concerned about bass frequencies getting to the mic through the mount, even with shock mounts. This may be acceptable with a snare drum, but a grand piano? I wouldn't do it. I'd just get a good boom stand, attach the mic mount to that, and leave it up.-Richie

Someone makes a mic bar that attaches to the sides of the piano and stretches across the strings. It has clips for two mics. I can't remember who makes it though.

Probably it's a better design than directly clamping onto the harp, which is more likely to create some unwanted resonances or buzzes.

Ok, the name of the product is “Slider Piano Barre Microphone Mount System” and I've just emailed who I think is their Parent company (LM Products www.lmproducts.com )

I found this company by searching and finding http://www.slider-straps.com I emailed them and found out that LM Products is their Parent company.. so that's where I am now.. I'll hopefully get an email back from them.

I don't think that the Piano Barre system is still in production.. but we can hope..

FOR THE SAKE OF Chris F.. PLEASE LET IT BE!

:D

Actually, seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a DIY version. You could even make the crossbar out of wood.
