Howdo?

I am curious if any of you have ever used km-184's, NT-2's or a mic such as a Rode Classic II for miking toms. I imagine that they would reproduce much warmer and present drum sounds than dynamic mics. Also, have you ever used very sensitive mics such as the Classic II to mic up guitar amps? The Classic II has a max SPL of 130 and also has roll offs on it. I dont want to fry it but I want to experiment with using it on some of my amps.

Best,

Do you mean using the NT2's as an overhead or close up micing of the toms???

Hi Sabith

Well i am thinking of using the km184's either for over heads or for the snare and hi-hat, the NT-2's for toms. If I were to use the km-184's for the snare an hi-hat, maybe the a pair of Classic II's for overheads. NT-2's have an SPL of 135 so I would think they would be ok for toms. What do you think??

Cheers,

in my unedgimicated opinion...

you'd probably be better using a 57 or something for the toms, an NT2 would most likely pick up everything in the kit so its best to put it as an overhead.

Assuming You Already Have These Mics...

I myself would probably set-up like this:

Assuming I decided to mic the hi-hat:
SM-57 or KM-184 on snare (depending on the type of music or song)
NT-2s on toms
KM-184 on high-hat
Classic IIs as overheads

Assuming I decided NOT to mic the hi-hat:
SM-57 on snare
NT-2s on toms
KM-184s or Classic IIs (which ever I ended-up liking better; if I liked the Classic IIs better, again. I might try the KM-184 on snare)

What about the bass drum? What are you using for that? Might try a Classic II. Or, might try an ATM25 or D112 or Beta 52 or E602 or etc. inside the bass drum and use the Classic IIs are stereo room mics; probably positioned somewhere on different sides of the width of the room from each other.

By The Way

You might better be more concenered about overloading the preamp inputs more than anything else. You may need a few pads if you use a KM-184 on snare or NT-2s on toms.
