So I've been looking around online at different mic cable sets, and I just can't find what I'm looking for! I'm in search of cables for my drum mics, but it's getting a bit frustrating. It seems the only brands music stores are selling are either Horizon or Monster, and Monster is a bit out of my desired price range. Are the Horizon cables really as bad as some of the reviews say?? I've heard some questionable things about them that make me nervous to purchase any. What do some of you use?

Also, forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference between Hi-Z and Lo-Z?

I use nothing but *Road Hog* from Rapco .
You can purchase them straight from them with no middleman music store to deal with --Just google them up.

I make all my own cables. For mic cables I use Mogami or Canare wire with Neutrik ends. The cables I made 20 years ago still work.

I would steer clear of Monster cables - they're all image and big cables and while they may be good you are paying a lot for bullshit hype.

In the long run using cheap cables is the most expensive way to go, the cheapest way is to make your own with the parts the pros use.

I get all my parts from Markertek.

God cabling is a must

I agree with DintyMoore..... Mogami, Canare, and Neutrik are the only way to go and make them yourself it's not that hard. Just pay attention to the phasing. I get my stuff from PacRad, (Pacific Radio) Google them. Cheap cables will cost you in your overall sound quality.

Belden also makes good cable.

I bought a roll of it awhile ago, and I just make my own as needed. It's a bit of work...but one added bonus is that you can make custom lenghts that fit your needs.
Like...if you only want a 5' cable...you end up paying almost as much as for a 25' cable when buying ready-made stuff...and if you need a 35' cable...you have to buy a 50' ready-made (usually).

Thanks for the advice! I've thought about making my own cables, but I don't know if I could. Heck, I don't even know what I'm really looking for part-wise! I'm really just in need of 6-7 cables for my drum mic set!

You can only learn one thing at a time, and maybe the right thing to do now is just store the info about making your own cables and buy some cheap ones so you can do your recording.

There's nothing wrong with that. You can never have too many cables, and I have a few total cheapos from who knows where that always seem to work.

Yeah, think I'll stick with that for now! Cables frustrate me...it always seems like I just have 3 options!

1)DIY
2)Cheap junk
3)High-end stuff

I always figured there would be a cable somewhere between cheap and high-end, but I just can't find 'em. Then again, I don't really know much about cable brands anyway! :laughings:

Those are pretty much your options.

The reason I said that to you is because there's a zillion things you can snag on and things will never be 100% ideal, even if you were in the best studios.

The bottom line is you plug in a cable and if it sounds good then who cares how much it costs. If you do it a lot it will be worth either making or buying good stuff at some point. Cheap cables are fine sometimes.

I like the way you put that. Thanks for the advice!

Looks good! How do you order from them directly? I've looked, but can't find it...

Sorry I missed your earlier post!

This thread made me think of this:

A chick singer I used to work with flew to LA and recorded in Stevie Wonder's studio and it was all fucked up. I've worked with the best musicians in the world and it's been all fucked up. It's usually kind of fucked up! Things go wrong, you don't have the right adapter, the sound sucks. All that stuff never goes away and people need to realize that it isn't because they're noobs, it's just the way it is. It's life.

Every studio I've ever been in has some funky combination of the best gear in the world and some duct tape around some Radio Shack part. It's always like that. If you went on the space shuttle you'd probably see it.
