Phantom power refers to the 48V dc power that many mic preamps send over the mic cable to power condenser microphones. Your usb interface has microphone preamps built into it, but it doesn not supply phantom power.

thanks Jim and Jeff,

that makes sense because the mic i am using at the moment has an AA/AAA battery inside it - so the FastTrack obviously isn't powering it: will be something more than curious to see how the M-Audio 'SoundCheck' mic functions then: according to our theory it would also be battery powered?

FastTrack doesn't say what it's power source is called apart from "USB" of course, so i presume there must be a class of hardware out there under the 'usb powered' header? i have an external HDD which is powered by the usb plug, for example; i will have to stop thinking of this as 'phantom powered'

I knew we'd get to the bottom of this one sooner or later.

promise you if the new mic gives me decent reproduction i will reset every clock in the flat - most of them are way out anyway because of this crazy hour shift we have to go through over here, twice a year

No.
Dynamic microphones do not require power.
Follow Jeff's directions to Wikipedia
then do the same for Dynamic Microphones.

thanks :)
