Hey guys!

I hate to litter your forum with useless "best mic for Anthrax sound" or "best mic for an orphan child with two dogs" but I can't seem to find anything with the search.

I'm going to be picking up an SM57 for micing general stuff, mainly heavy guitar ...

I'd like to know if this would also be a good mic to record an SRV type sound. Lots of very low end bass. Basically, a mix of clean when playing softly, and major distortion when the guitar is attacked hard.

What mic would you consider a really good mic for this particular situation? Money is not an extremely large issue, but I don't think I'll be dishing out $1000 for a mic.

Thanks in advance!

Well, if the sound is happening at the amp, a 57 would be fine!
I also had great results with a Beyer M160 for these kind of sounds, it has a fat, warm bottom end and a thick midrange.
But it can`t be jammed into the grille of the amp, so I usually end up with a 57 real close(kissing cloth), and the M160 a foot away.
Also, some LD condensers can give you that clear tight bass.
