I'm new. I wonder what methods you folks using CEP or AA at home have for getting microphone audio in to your PC and on the CEP? Are you all using mixers ? I assume most soundcards do not handle regular, non PC, microphones.

Andy.

 Right after I posted the earlier message my brain worked a little and I remember I could probably use a mic preamp. Any basic ones that people here are using ?

Yeah, some people use the pres on their mixers...I use a dedicated preamp. It's a little DMP3 from MAudio that I like a lot. 2 ins, 2 outs - Around $200, I think.

Before I had the preamp though, I used to record by taking a dynamic mic (SM58) and attaching 2 adapters (XLR >>> 1/4", then 1/4" >>> 1/8"--into soundcard input)...it looked ridiculous having about 9 inches of adapters, but it worked. You can pick up both adapters at radioshack for a total of about $5, and it will actually record sound.

Having said that, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A PREAMP, lol.

Good luck

I don't use a mixer for recording. I use a channel strip - a box that contains a preamp, EQ, compression, and a tube - it sounds way better than the crappy pres in my mixer. I don't use a mixer for mixing either - I mouse mix. I've got a mixer though - I use it for listening to playback from the soundcard.

I have recently been considering a channel strip for myself instead of a mixer. what do you have/recommend?

I've got a great channel strip - a Mindprint Envoice.

But if I had it to do all over again lol - I think I'd get a very good preamp and chain it to a compressor.
