fellas, can anyone give me the lowdown on a good dynamic and/or condensor mic for recording hiphop/rap vocals..also a decent pre would be nice .......thanks in advance

The all important question of price range comes up once again.

Also is this for live, or for studio.

For Studio a large diaphram condensor will give you the best quality, but will be un-usable live. A dynamic mic like a shure sm58 will work both ways, but won't give you great quality for studio.

A nice LD (large diaphram) condensor for cheap is the Studio Projects B1. It's only 80 dollars US (approximatly) and is supposed to be excellent. In the next little while the Studio Projects VTB-1 single channel preamp is supposed to drop to somewhere around 130 dollars US, and is supposed to be an awesome preamp, and for the new low price a no brainer.

The studio projects C1 is about 199 US and better. And the list goes on and on and on... But i think to get better quality than the VTB-1 you'd have to go to something like the Grace 101 or the RNP, which is 3-5 times as much. Apparantly the VTB-1 is awesome for the price, and at the even lower price it will be at soon i'm thinking i'll have to buy one even i don't plan on using it.

For studio, I'd check out either a Sennheiser HD-421 ($300) or Shure SM-7 ($495) for big, fat-sounding dynamics, and the Studio Projects B1 ($85) or C1 ($225) for great vocal LD condensers.
Preamps... well, there's lots to choose from. For low dollars, look at the ART Tube MP at around $80. For live work, I'd stick with a Shure SM-58 because they're pretty much indestructable.

thanks for the quick reply guys ,I've never used or even heard of the Studio projects condensor mic I'm ashamed to say but you both recommend it .is it really a good mic?

Apparantly excellent. But what is your price range. You can obviously get something better for more money, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a good microphone.

In the first part of your statement you say the B1 is a nice cheap mic. Then you say the B1 is "supposed" to be excellent. In your opinion, is the B1 a nice excellent cheap mic or not? Also, what application(s) do you like it for most? Thank you.

Well people on this board use them a lot. People who have, or could have more expensive mics. I say supposed to be because i have never used one, but i follow these forums quite closely.

Relative to it's price, it's an excellent mic. Better than any other $80 mics I can think of besides an sm57.

Save your money if you just want excellent, though. There's still a pretty wide gap.

Chessrock is right. I have a B-1, and it is a worthy utility mic at it's price point. Main vocal mics can be $4000+ before modifications! What do *you* think is a nice excellent mic? We are all on a spectrum. Is the B-1 worth $80? Yes.-Richie

Well, my Studio Projects B1 has not been used as a vocal mic here yet in my little studio, because people have picked other mic's over it for vocals so far. But, we have used the SP B1 for miking guitar amps. IMO, The Studio Projects B1 is a good mic and well worth the $79.

I wish people who have never used a product would stop postng comments as if they've have experiense with it. And everyone who reads these forms in hope of getting inside info about a product needs to know that some of the people commenting here may have no experiense with that product. :(
