Mic Advice

Those in the know, should I get another C1 or try one of these Marshall V67 mics. Is there that much difference?
 
That's what I'm thinking. Maybe save $100 bucks.
 
I think that compared to a C1, the v67 sounds kind of muddy and lacking focus. I don't care what Harvey or anyone else says. The v67 is worth the $100 they're charging for it.
 
With the V67 you'd get variety. With another C1 you'd get stereo. Which do you want?

Nah that's what I wanted to hear. I sold my older C1 and am looking for a replacement at a lower cost. Hey, these are Chinese mics right, they gotta sound similar.

Chessparov, I have an NTK but am looking for something less warm like the C1 for background vocals or just an alternative sound. Trying to save a buck or two. If I don't hear any stellar reccomendations I will just buy another C1.

What about these 2.

No argument there, chessrock. And the reverse is also true: compared to a V67, the C1 sounds brighter with a slight midrange scoop.

But I'd characterize the V67 as a darker, warmer mic, and for the right voice, it's a great value.

It boils down to the fact that the qualities that you don't like in the V67 are the very qualities I admire. I don't have a problem with that. I find the V67 to be closer to the sound of the older Neumanns like the U47, which didn't have a lot of noticable top end. The C1 is more like a U67/C12 kinda sound, which is a bit brighter and more focused (as you said).

Both sounds are quite useful.
 
When I tested C3, NTK and B1 side by side I'd pick the B1 if you want a less warm sound. In many ways C3 sounded similar to the NTK but B1 was a lot "cooler" sound.

Yeah, the B1 was also in my sights. Wonder how that compares to the the rest.

Well, Midman, I own a B-1, a C-3, and an NTK. I generally disagree with the idea that C-3 sounds like NTK. The C-3 is brighter, with more high end detail, but can also be harsh if misused. The NTK can be muddy, too, it's just a matter of track and pre matching. B-1 is farther up the transparent spectrum, and is the least colored condenser I own, except maybe C414B-ULS. It's an outstanding mic at it's price point. I'm sure it will work on some singers, especially damn good ones, but if you're looking for a flattering mic for a so-so singer, B-1 ain't it. I think of it as an outstanding cheap instrument mic that will work on some singers.
I have no direct experience with the V67 or C-1, but C-3 is a vocal mic I will occasionally use in preference to my B.L.U.E. Kiwi, precisely because it's a little less accurate, and doesn't reveal every flaw in a performance, but it cuts through a mix better than NTK. I like NTK for spare arrangements, especially blues, and C-3/Kiwi when I've got a bunch of shit to cut through.-Richie

v93 - very bright; sometimes harsh if you're not careful.

m177 - very nice choice. neutral-sounding for the most part. outstanding for the money.
 
"Background vocals" Hmmm..
Why not consider the B3 also then, in addition to the C3?
The omni pattern is great for BGV's or group vocals.

If you're thinking about the M177, save some cash and get the M37. I believe they're the same mic pretty much. When looking inside mine, the circuit board says M177. Just a thought. Very usable mic.

I questioned tech support at CAD about the M37 vs the M177 with the following response:

The circuit boards and electronics are the same. Besides the physical appearance, the capsules are different. Quality control is the same. We purchase the capsules from a vender and the actual thickness of the polymer is not speced for my use. It (M37 capsule) is the same version that was used in the E300 with just the front side.

So the mics may sound a bit different.
